“La fibra óptica tiene hoy un valor estratégico para los países, las empresas y los proveedores de servicios, en tanto es parte de la infraestructura indispensable para responder de forma adecuada a las necesidades de la digitalización en todos los niveles”, comenta Ramiro Herrera, director de Carriers de CenturyLink en Chile.
El ejecutivo comenta que algunos países presentan óptimas condiciones para atraer inversiones en este campo, dado que existe una visión de Estado que impulsa el fortalecimiento de su infraestructura de telecomunicaciones. “Existen proyectos emblemáticos que apuntan a dotar a varias ciudades de una infraestructura de fibra óptica en todo el territorio nacional y ampliar al máximo los enlaces submarinos internacionales,
muchos de ellos en iniciativas público-privadas, existiendo plena conciencia de la importancia de la conectividad de alta velocidad como motor de desarrollo económico y social”, sostiene.
Factores Favorables
El ejecutivo afirma que la fibra óptica es esencial no sólo para las empresas y hogares, sino también para los propios países, dado el advenimiento de la Internet de las Cosas (IoT). “El fortalecimiento de la infraestructura de fibra óptica es esencial para el desarrollo de las Ciudades Inteligentes, que son las que concentrarán en el futuro el desarrollo y protagonismo económico a nivel mundial. Los sensores estarán conectados en todos lados, incluyendo la vía pública y su infraestructura, y requerirán de la capacidad para enviar datos en tiempo real por canales confiables, veloces y seguros”.
Asimismo, destaca a la IA y la Automatización como otros factores que también dan hoy protagonismo a la fibra óptica en las empresas. “La convergencia de las tecnologías de la información con las tecnologías operativas, marcan el auge de infraestructura de conectividad resistente a ambientes hostiles, propios de las zonas productivas, industriales y fábricas, siendo indispensable el uso de la fibra para cumplir con esa finalidad, marcada por la consolidación de las soluciones de IA, Automatización y Robótica”, sentencia. Y agrega que “al mismo tiempo, la fibra comienza a usarse cada vez más hasta el ‘escritorio’, dadas sus capacidades y durabilidad, por lo que muchas empresas están renovando su capa física con este tipo de tecnologías”.
Finalmente, el Director de Carriers de CenturyLink en Chile subraya la importancia de la fibra óptica en la materialización de las redes de quinta generación (5G), las cuales en México se encuentran en franco avance. “Las redes 5G requieren el uso de la fibra óptica debido a que necesitan una mayor densidad de sus estaciones de radio base respecto de las redes anteriores, por lo que también juegan un papel importante en este desarrollo a la Internet de alta velocidad que, en este caso, ascenderá hasta los 10 gigabits por segundo”, concluye.
